I just found out my main martial arts instructor, as well as the guy who is probably the second most responsible person for my daughters black belt (my daughter being the person most responsible for that achievement) has been inducted into the U.S.A. Martial Arts Hall of Fame. If anyone deserves this honor it's Mike. It's amazing to me since he broke his back in several places- four or five, maybe six just can't remember, in 2005 and was told by every doctor he saw that likely he would never be able to continue teaching yet alone compete ever again. I flew up to see him compete in his return to professional matches at the annual "Mighty River Classic" in Vancouver Washington in 2010. He took the top purse of 20K. Really very little prize money for Mike, I saw him on TV take out 12 guys in a one day Vegas match for a 400K top prize. Anyway after seemingly easily taking out all 18 other contestants he took first place and the cash. Many of opponents that day were nearly half his age ( I think 44 at the time.) I remember one young Hispanic kid who must have spent more time working on his one line insults then he did working on his style, form and techniques. Should have worked more on those things then his mouth. Mike knocked hm out in 6 sec. flat. Poor kid left on a gurney, according to Mike, mumbling something about the magazine being left open to the wrong page. The announcer mentioned that "this type of thing is rarely seen at this level. But it might be where the expression "talk is cheap comes from." The crowd both laughed and cheered. Many in the audience, most I'd guess, had no idea of Mikes back story or the injuries he worked himself back from.

Anyway in Mikes honor and finally with my doctor's Ok I'm enjoying a Jack and coke this evening, Here's to you my friend, my teacher, my brother- cheers. You deserve it.
