    Agree.

I felt a bit let down that it got relegated firmly into the "action film" category.

Visuals were great. Acting was great. Some great lines, etc.

However, I wasn't wowed in terms of story and plot turns.

There was just something about it, that didn't feel like a Star Trek film (and I thought the last film was great).

For one, I wanted to know more about the antagonist's back story.

Yes, but aren't we expecting too much from a Star Trek film?

I can't seem to recall any of them going to far into detail or background. (perhaps hints, but just that)
If anything the background is drawn from so many years of episodes...none of which did so themselves individually.

It's always about the sci-fi and the quick moving plot.

IMHO, I take it as I see it.
I don't expect much from the Star Wars series either...

This reboot series has gone into the characters way more than ever before.

Picking up on this one -
I expected nothing when I watched the first and second Star Wars prequel on the big screen. It took me an effort to not walk out halfway through both times even with my $4.25 ticket thanks to military discount.
The last Trek film was not quite that bad, but if they had offered me an even partial refund to leave halfway through I likely would have taken it quickly and had no problems with that at all.

describes my view of the 2009 film nicely. I kept expecting Tom Cruise to show up with his MI team and assorted gadgets.

I was more forgiving of that one, as I am with any initial film of a reboot or new franchise. Character introductions, showcasing new presentations of the visuals, etc. It's expected. I was really looking forward to this new film because I wanted to see them strike out on adventures to make fantastic discoveries and shit.

Now the end of the new film sets up the third for that sort of thing, but I'm not going to hold my breath or anything.

I think today's blockbuster standards can't allow the production of the kind of film I would enjoy in this respect.

I agree with some of what you've said, but all the same, I enjoyed it for what it was. I'm going to see it again with a friend tonight. I'm sure it will be better this time around since I won't have to repress involuntary noises or constantly wipe up my drool.

I would see it again, I think it's one of those where things emerge in a 2nd viewing you miss in the first and it enriches the film.

That was very well done. Star Trek II is one of my favourites (ST:VI might be higher in the non-comedic category in some respects), but I also was not an adult with that perspective when it was released or when I first saw it not many years later.
I suspect that time will not improve my view of the 2009 film unless they actually get WORSE in the next 20-30 years; the last one actually improved my view of ST:V - The classic "What the hell were you thinking when you wrote this story?" film. This line from Baraka_Guru is relevant here "I think today's blockbuster standards can't allow the production of the kind of film I would enjoy in this respect."
Films that I absolutely love like The Big Sleep, Casablanca, The General, Night at the Opera, or Arsenic and Old Lace would be butchered by most of the current "Blockbuster" filmakers if they filmed them now. Not to mention look worse in colour, the B&W theme was not intentional but hardly surprised me when I took a second look at my list.
To get more sci-fi specific I prefer films like the The Thing (the original with James Arness or the 1982 Kurt Russell), The Day the Earth Stood Still (again the original), or the immortal Metropolis.

I found this to be totally true after a second viewing this evening. Plus, this time I had more time to enjoy the brief scenes John Cho was in.

Mancandy: Chris Pine, John Cho, Karl Urban, and Benedict Cumberbatch in the same film...Zach Quinto is fun to watch as Spock but he bats for the other team, so I just don't feel the same. And damn, the ladycandy is fine too--both Zoe Saldana and Alice Eve look amaaaaazing.

Now, it's interesting that you all say this...I take things as they come.
It either works or it doesn't...I'm simply going to the movie to enjoy myself.

But it's like a song, sometimes the original is unsurpassed...sometimes they do an excellent job with the new one.

And I also try not to judge characters by the actors lives, I like emersing myself into what they're playing then.
To do otherwise is to do a disservice to the whole "worldview" of the movie.

That's why I like critics that haven't gotten too cynical or take a movie apart.
It's just about the dark venue, the snacks...and the entertainment in front of you.

And if it sucks...I leave. Like Highlander II (that made me so pissed)

I enjoyed the crap out of this movie. ( I'm not a Star Trek fan ) My wife's a big Star Trek nerd and she was bouncing in her seat the whole flick.

I liked that the reboot changed the characters a bit, but I really enjoy that Bones' character is about spot on with the original.

And Karl Urban is FANTASTIC in the role. He had a lot of great lines...plus he's easy on the eyes. I loved him as Eomer in the LOTR films as well.

Karl Urban is a good actor. I don't always recognize him right away in his various roles, mainly because he isn't the same guy each time with wardrobe changes.

If you like Karl Urban, be sure not to miss him as "the Law" going up against Cersei Lannister as a drug boss in a dystopian future in Dredd.

In Dredd you can't see his face.

Also, JJ Abrams cut a scene of Benedict Cumberbatch taking an evil shower from the final product:

EXCLUSIVE: J.J. Abrams Shows A Deleted "Star Trek Into Darkness" Scene @ TeamCoco.com

What a jerk. Female Trek fans don't get any love. As if Kirk being shirtless is supposed to be equal to Alice Eve in her underwear! I mean, I'm not complaining about that, but I think if people are going to go without clothes it should be equitable.

Additionally, one of my pet peeves about the reboot is the reintroduction of the skant. Women in active jobs don't wear skirts TODAY, what would make them choose to wear a skant in the future?! Pants for everyone.

I liked his vampire in Priest

  20. Finally picked up the initial reboot on BluRay. Now I can seriously consider seeing Into Darkness.
Glad I did it this way. Frankly, there is a lot I didn't recall, or was purposefully forgetting.
