1. We've had very few donations over the year. I'm going to be short soon as some personal things are keeping me from putting up the money. If you have something small to contribute it's greatly appreciated. Please put your screen name as well so that I can give you credit. Click here: Donations

Do you give to charity? If so, what causes do you support?

    pWf Getting Tilted

I have stopped donating to charities, instead I try and help individuals with things they need. Then instead of payment I make them promise to pay it forward.

I used to take part in an organization for handicapped people from physical to mental conditions. They sponsor a day for them to get out of the house and enjoy the arts. I donated my time in filming the event, and then making an event video for the group. It won state recognition, and they gave my boss an award for it. Because he let me use the equipment at the place I worked to make it. I was not mentioned. I still felt it was a good cause, and went back again the next year to make a better video since we had more time to plan and do it right. During this time, I was with the organizer of the event. She was handing out envelopes to each of the "Arts Teachers" for the day. I asked what that was, and she told me that the people teaching at the event were all paid. She said some of them donated their checks back to the organization. To me this was the end. Maybe I looked at it wrong, but it was just one to many things for me. I didn't mention the name of the organization, because I still think they do good work, and I am not sure this is the practice in every city, but I am sure it must be.

I still like to keep an eye out for organizations if possible. If I see our IT dept or something else at work getting rid of things that the Boys & Girls club could use, or someone else, I always try and redirect, and make sure my place of work gets the recognition. I think the local boys and girls club is a very good thing in the community.

There are women's shelters. That is often where you will find women who have fled from husbands, boyfriends, etc. who have been abusing their children. And they can use not only money, but clothing, personal hygiene products, food, etc.

There's a local women's shelter here that I've been able to offload my "graveyard" of hair products on to over the years. Some places will take stuff that has been opened, which is great for everyone, I think.

  9. Have donated used furniture to a local women's shelter. They accumulate and store furniture for when a woman (usually with children) need to start over after leaving their SO. That way they can place them in a new residence that is ready for habitation.

I was apparently nominated to participate in on of those "lock up" fundraisers, supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The funds will be going to local chapters, for summer camps, clinics, and research. It isn't something I'd normally do, but I'm kinda glad I was chosen to participate.

I haven't had the time to continue volunteering with Junior Achievement (K-12 special topic guest teachers basically) like I'd wanted, but I'm still a routine fixture at campus rent-a-pup events run by the local no kill shelter.
