What's Blooming?

It's springtime!! What plants do you see blooming today?

This morning I enjoyed a walk with littlegirly. We saw the following plants in bloom!
    Lilac trees
    Crabapple
    Cherry

I'll share photos in the next few days.
I used to walk around a botanical garden a couple of times a week, noting in an official notebook what plants were in flower and what plants were bearing fruit. The garden had records dating back 100+ years. It was useful in their plant breeding and seed exchange programs, but it has been used for much more substantial projects. Phenology is the branch of botany that coorelates overarching weather patterns with flowering data. It's a pretty neat area of research, and a great excuse to slow down and smell more than just the roses.

So, tell me - what do you see happening with the plants in your neck of the woods today?

This is a child of an orchid that my sister bought my mother when she was in the 2nd grade from Marie Selby Gardens in Sarasota. The original has taken over my mother's side yard. No clue what it is, but I've had mine for 17 years. The parent is 26 years old :)

Not a whole lot yet. The crocuses are crocusing, and so are things like tulips, etc. We're still waiting for trees to kick out some activity.

I'm still stuck in winter mode with this damn cold I have on top of this cold spring so far. When things turn warm and green, I'm going to go out of my way to spend some time outside.

One of my symptoms right now is cabin fever.

Beautiful, Noodle! One of these years I will make it out to visit you - and when I do, I hope you'll share a cutting of your pretty orchid with me.

I don't know what they are...I just know they look pretty and I enjoy the sight & smell.
    Purple flowers on trees.
    Yellow green endings on others.
    and so on...

It's nice when I go walk my dogs...the green, the clear air, the color.

It's also one of the reasons I moved back to the east coast after a decade in San Diego.
The rich green and the texture, it shows the world is alive and time is moving.

San Diego was just so brown and blah, nothing had feeling or substance. (at least to me)
Most of the plants were non-indigenous and irrigated...maintained.

I guess I like the rain & moisture...and the full puffy clouds that come with it.
Interestingly, I was actually "excited" by it when I came back.
And now, it feels like it breathes into me when I'm out & about.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

I traveled from upstate NY to NYC and back this weekend.
My place looks like it's still winter. There are buds on the tress but that's about it. The only flowers at home are daffodils.
When you get down to Albany, and the upper Hudson valley, some of the tress have leaves.
In NYC, Central Park is over 80% leafed out.
So over the span of about 200 miles you can go from lingering winter to blooming spring!

The lilac is in bloom outside of my living room window. It smells amazing.

Irises are starting to pop up. The crabapple trees in front of the school where I work are in full bloom, and walking under them every day is a delicious experience.

Outside I saw these things blooming over the weekend: Lilacs, daffodils, dogwoods, tulips, pansies, dandelions, oaks (though their catkins aren't showy), cercis, violets, claytonia, duchman's breeches, trillium, stellaria, various grasses, bluebells, crab apple, and a native cherry.
    Fruiting: maples.
    Inside: my phalenopsis orchid! Yay!

HAHAHAHA! This thread! I swear after the Marijuana thread this is the first thing I thought of even though I knew GG is talking about plants!

Why isn't Ustwo here? He needs to be here! We needs him! Deliver him here! DELIVAAAAAAAAH!

Back to thread. I don't know if they're Jacaranda trees? The purple ones? Really good looking. But essentially NC most especially the Raleigh area they stay away from flowers and stick to trees. The pollen count the last three weeks was atrocious.

  12. Only about 10% of the trees have even started to show buds. They can't figure out this Michigan weather either.

GeneticShift Show me your everything is okay face.

We have a few that had full buds a few weeks ago, and then they all fell off. Not quite sure what's going to happen...

We are just getting started here, 25 miles NW of Chicago. The photos are of part of our gardens in the front and back of the house. There's still much more coming (yay!)
