So far the only one reporting that is CNN. We'll see if it is confirmed and what the charge is.

  4. Was reported on WGN noon news at the end of the broadcast. I posted it here then I saw it on CNN.com.

    This is interesting...

Apparently no arrest has been made but they have identified a suspect. Whether or not they have associated a name with that suspect remains to be seen, but there is a news conference set for about 1:15 from now.

Boston Police have tweeted that there has been no arrest in the case.

CNN has now retracted its report that an arrest had been made. The network has now broadcast three separate contributors citing multiple unnamed sources each that there has not been an arrest, contrary to John King's earlier report. One of the contributors was Tom Fuentes, former assistant director of the FBI, now on contract to CNN.

The Associated Press has not yet retracted ithat "a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings was taken into custody."

"Damage control" as in "distraction," right? I mean, once the next big story related to this breaks, it will be all about sensationalizing it, overeditorializing it, throwing pundits at it, and watching clips of it on incessant loops.

And flashy graphics. Don't forget the flashy graphics.

Oh, and this is worth a watch:

My first thoughts on this were 'far too small body count to be large group or organisation'. It is awful enough and just one death or injury (especially serious) is too much, but three dead is a damn low figure overall.

Yes. It wasn't as effective as the 18 killed in Pakistan yesterday or the dozens killed in Iraq over the past couple of days.

    But it sure is sensational.

These other attacks were suicide bombings or car bombs. It's a different kind of delivery system.

What a world we live in, eh?

There comes a point where all news is local. We didn't hear about the apartment fire in China that killed 14 either. At a certain point, the novelty factor wears off. We're used to hearing about bombs in the Middle East - Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, etc. That's not necessarily the fault of the media - it becomes something expected. Case in point - the IRA bombings in London got less and less press in the US as time went on.

There's also the "friends and neighbors" factor. Lots of folks know someone who has run or wants to run the Boston Marathon. It's a big deal for those in the running community and arguably the premier marathon in the country. If it were Grandma's Marathon in Minnesota, lots of folks wouldn't know that it existed before the tragedy. I don't think that there's any reason for an apology when you feel more of a connection with an event because you have an actual connection. While it would be great if we could all feel sorrow for those that died in Pakistan yesterday, it can be difficult when that tragedy is small in the greater scheme of things (Haiti, Japan, Syria, London, etc [unfortunately]). I don't think that is a uniquely American issue, either.

I usually watch ABC in Oz (our BBC - not sure of the US equivalent). Last night I watched one of the commercial TV news reports. I felt dirty afterwards. Fully half the (1/2 hour) bulletin was on the bombs in Boston. Was there anything new to report? Not really, so the main film was regurgitated, and we were given some "look at these heroes, who rushed to help" interviews. I am not belittling the efforts of people on the scene, but this is hardly "news". It has just confirmed for me that the news from the government owned broadcaster is a lot more balanced.

Lish - I hope that the majority of people realise that this kind of act has nothing to do with religion/skin colour etc., and has more to do with nut cases/extremists. Unfortunately, there is a noisy minority that wants to point the finger at Muslims/Arabs. Sadly, this minority is probably larger than it should be :(

I don't watch TV news at all these days. My news comes from my Google News aggregator and places like TFP. Not being part of the ouroboros that is the 24 hours news cycle certainly changes your perspective on things.

Yes, the bombing is bad but it isn't eating up very much of my time and worry. I am more concerned, in the grand scheme of things, with the damage that Toronto's mayor is doing to Toronto, than another bombing somewhere in the world.

That is not to say I am trying to be cynical or lessen the bombing's impact on people. I am simply trying to put it into a personal context that is relevant to me.

This is true to a large extent. Now that some time has passed, I don't feel any more or less emotional about what happened in Boston than what happened in Pakistan and Iraq. It's all human tragedy to me. It's all happening in foreign countries. I know people who know people in all these areas. But that's as close to home as it gets.

I guess what I mean to say is that my sympathies extend more equally to all these events than perhaps those of people who are closer to these individual events.

I also acknowledge that all of this stuff has an impact, regardless. The unsettled nature of Iraq and Pakistan has an impact on both Americans and Canadians.

Ultimately, I'm afraid I choose to disengage because I can. I'm embarrassed by the amount of luxury I have to participate in escapism/avoidance with little direct consequence.

People still watch network news programs? I have not watched much of those at all since the first gulf war when they were playing the same footage endlessly and moving their mouths with nothing new to say.

  19. We always had bombings - and the fear of them. Post boxes would take out a large area, a large crowd. Political statement my aunt Fanny. Cold blooded murder is what it always was. Cowards.
Pity they didnt blow up when they were being built, taking out their maker/s.
Must admit, on this mornings news the explosion in the fertilizer factory - did at first wonder if the two were connected, but obviously not. That would have been far more scarey.
