What do you do for a cold?

I'm curious--what do you do for a cold?

I got sick a lot with colds last winter, and so I eventually perfected a cold care regimen that seemed to work for me by making me less miserable and shortening the cold's duration. Generally, it involved a lot of sinus rinsing, Traditional Medicinals tea, ibuprofen, Mucinex, and something to help me sleep at night--either diphenhydramine or doxylamine succinate. I can't use things like Afrin because they jack up my blood pressure. I've only had one cold so far this winter, and it lasted five days from start to finish.

What's your cold care routine? What about it works for you?

If I can catch it early enough, I've had success with TamiFlu and massive amounts of liquids. I also usually add in some Nasonex and/or Afrin nose spray, echinacea tea, chloroseptic for my throat, and maybe some NyQuil to help sleep.

    And lots of Puffs Plus.

The only tissue to touch my nose. I buy Kirkland for everyone else.

  5. When I used to be smart, I was taking a zinc supplement along with my daily multivitamin and extra vitamin C. Now that I'm older and denser, I just start taking Zicam when I feel a cold coming on. Seems to help most of the time. When it doesn't, there's Nyquil.

I take a multivitamin with zinc, and I try to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Also, tons of water, and washing my hands frequently. Prevention-wise, I think that helps more than anything.

When someone gets sniffly and sneezy around me, I break out the Airborne and the Lysol.

If it actually catches up with me, I can get over the worst of it by taking some Nyquil and sleeping it off. I also tend to over-indulge in orange juice and chocolate, but that's more of a comfort thing :)

If I can catch it soon enough Zicam seems to work, I don't want it to start in the first place.
I'm not one to "tough" it out and let it get hold and linger, I kill it quick.

But if it does, sleep...take it easy, eat well.
Standard OTC for the symptoms, as it doesn't have sudafedrin in it...which makes my heart race...or Tylenol, which doesn't work for me.
Day-time for work, Night-time for sleep. (I get generic for a great price and volume from CostCo)

I'll remote work to pull back or keep my hours short for a couple of days.
Usually it's stress that triggers my catching colds.
Although I seemed to catch everything this December while I was using the train for commuting for last project
...but I was STRESSED during that time, both in personal life and work intensity.

Living in the tropics I find that I don't get that many colds anymore. I think I have had two or three in all the time I have lived here (seven years). When I used to get them, I would just make sure I stayed hydrated and carried a whack of tissues. I would take decongestants when needed and gargle with salt for the times my throat was sore.

I always felt that nothing really works too great, so sleep is best for me.
Zinc gluconate, such as coldeeze lozenges are suppose to work by destroying the cold virus in the throat so it doesn't become a full blown cold. Taste horrible and upsets the stomach.
Also Zinc does NOT help if you have the flu.
Sleep and fluids are the best medicine along with chicken noodle soup.

  10. Zinc occupies the receptors that rhino-virus latch onto, helping prevent or shorten colds (or, so I'm told). Flu is a whole other kettle.

    Never needed more than that.

All the water I can take. When I over-water, balance out with some electrolyte-enhanced water... then repeat.

If I have to be up and functional, I'll Dayquil myself until I'm done needing to be functional.

Same. I've never met a cold medication that didn't make me feel worse than the cold itself. Lot's of Kleenex (generic for me) and I'll try not to share; but it will just run it's course.

I usually just let it run its course, sleeping as much as possible. However, this year, I was required to be more functional and not a sniffly mess, so I took some decongestants. I actually really like AlkaSeltzer for colds now.. most other OTC drugs on the market have too many active ingredients, and 1 or more of them messes with my heart rate or makes me feel spacey. The AlkaSeltzer takes care of the worst symptoms and doesn't make me a complete space cadet.. just a partial one.

I also tend to drink a lot of warm herbal teas (chamomile, lemon and honey) as they go down more easily than cold water. My trip to the store when I'm starting to get sick has a list of AlkaSeltzer, gatorade/powerade, chamomile teabags, and Ensure for those times I either don't feel like eating (often when I'm sick) or my throat hurts too much to swallow something non-liquid.

I probably need to get back on the zinc thing again, but zinc is the one supplement I used to take a few times a week that irritated my stomach too much. I vomited a handful of times before I finally gave up on it.
