What's your dream vacation?

I'm watching an episode of Rick Steves' Europe this morning in which he visits Burgundy and travels via barge to see the countryside. That has been a dream vacation of mine for several years now. I'd love to relax and watch the French countryside roll slowly by while sipping a glass of fine wine, stopping occasionally to explore the villages and towns we pass. This is just one of several dream vacations I have in mind.

    What is your dream vacation?

    Dream vacation:
Camping with just my husband on a tropical island with beaches, mountains, cloud forests, and ample fresh water. The opportunity to hike in a range of habitats easily, feeling removed from civilization. Minimal gear so we can pitch our tiny tent somewhere new each night and plenty of privacy so we can feel at-ease with as much spontaneous kissing and love-making as we want.
Definitely have the place picked out for this and was hoping to go for our 5th anniversary but I may push it to our 6th since we probably won't want to be away from our little baby in June.

Yeah, I could definitely eat my way through Japan. I really want to go to Osaka and eat myself silly. Mm, okonomiyaki.

Dragon*Con is so very awesome, and the only real "vacation" we take...but we've been saying, as fun as it is, it's not exactly relaxing.

A dream vacation for me would be something that mixes lazy and active...sleeping in and laying around by the pool/lake/ocean, but also doing things like skiing, hiking, and swimming. I've been wanting to go to Costa Rica for years now.

I'd also love to do a volunteer vacation...spend some time on a wildlife sanctuary in Africa, or work with turtle conservation projects in Mexico.

  15. For me the best vacation is one that totally removes work related thoughts from my mind. Generally that means I need to be active or involved for that to happen. Even something as mundane as taking a few days off to paint the trim on the house will do that. Ideally, a few days of activity to make sure I am 'unplugged' followed by a few days of relaxation.

My real dream vacation, which I never expect to actually be able to take, would start in California, in San Francisco: we'd rent a car, road trip down the coast to Los Angeles, and the turn east, taking the southern route across the country, seeing the Grand Canyon, the Gulf Coast, then angling up through the South, seeing the sights as we go, until we get to Washington DC, spend some time there, then follow the east coast north, until we got to New York. Spend some time there, then cross the Atlantic by ship, to England. Spend a few weeks touring the British Isles, then take the train to Paris, and spend the next couple of months wandering around Europe by train, city to city, all over Western Europe, and working just a little bit into Eastern Europe. We'd save Greece for last, see the sights there, and then go by ship to Israel, and end up there, touring the country and crossing over to Egypt to see the pyramids and whatnot, and over to Jordan to see Petra, before settling in to spend a good chunk of time in Jerusalem-- enough time to merit a short-term apartment rental or suchlike.

It's not that I wouldn't be interested in seeing some other places. But this would really be my ideal trip.

Also: Years ago, ZombieSquirrel and I talked about doing a cross-country road trip, hitting all the obnoxious roadside attractions (like World's Biggest Ball of Twine, that kind of thing.) If we could get our hands on an RV, and if we could both take the time to make it a leisurely trip, I'm pretty sure that would be the best vacation ever.

Rewatching the Lord of the Rings movies after seeing The Hobbit reminded me of how much I'd love to tour around New Zealand. I took a travel writing class several years ago in which I had to plot out a month-long trip to a place of my choosing. I put together a tour of the North and South islands, including several spots where they filmed LOTR. The trip also featured some opportunities to go birding, as New Zealand has very unique bird populations. I think now that I am better at paddlesports, I would include some sea kayaking, and for my husband, more hiking.
