My kids and I love playing the table top version of Ticket to Ride. It is the perfect length for everyone to get into it and be competitive but not get bored. We like Monopoly but usually play with a time limit so people don't get bored and drift off.

Battleship? Is it even still around? Of course, it is only for two players at a time.

And Clue. Wow, my sisters and brothers and I played it constantly when we were young.

Rummy-O / Rummikub is a great game that involves numbered tiles and is very easy to teach anyone over the age of 12. It's a big hit when we get the international and domestic grad students together, because the game is incredibly visual and has no language barrier.

Life was a game that we loved playing when I was a kid - all the little pieces make it fun. They are also incredibly easy to lose and not very much fun to step on when lost in carpet. But I remember the sense of accomplishment when I met each goal in the game. I can't imagine enjoying the game as an adult, though.

Monopoly and variants similar to it (Solarquest rocked) were quite fun when I was a kid, and I still enjoy them now. It's entertaining to take on a role as you're playing - to have a consistent strategy. It is important to have a definite endpoint in mind when you begin or else it can drag on for weeks.

Cranium, Taboo, and In A Pickle are all games that I enjoy playing with friends and family presently. They make for lively party games. Cranium is a combination of trivia, charades, and pictionary. Taboo is all about words. In A Pickle encourages elaborate spinning of entertaining stories in an attempt to join a number of seemingly unrelated words.

Then there's RISK. There's a game I will never cease to adore. Oh so much fun.
It's on-par with Settlers of Catan.

Solarquest is a fun one. You should be on a planet before starting a laser battle though or you will run out of fuel very quickly.

I must add the Farming Game on this list. Involves some strategy and the randomness of dice do a good job simulating the unpredictability of actual farming, harvest seasons, and all that.

That show is where I discovered Ticket to Ride which quickly became our go to game.

  9. We play Settlers, Carcassonne, Dominion, Robo Rally. Just got Forbidden Island, but haven't had a chance to play it yet.

I just have to mention how (pleasantly) surprised I am to see that, in this age of solitary digital entertainment, people are still gathering around a table to play board games.

I'm not a board game person... the turn-based action just drives me crazy when people just fart around. If you want to talk, talk. If you want to play, play. My wife/kids/friends/extended family, on the other hand, love them. They play:
    Apples to Apples
Settlers (they have several expansion packs)
    Carcasonne
    Powergrid

In addition, although it's not a board game, but another sloooowwww game I can never enjoy, they love to play Loup Garou (werewolf). I think you can get a packaged game, but it's definitely not needed.

Apparently, when I told a new friend that I was having people over for a game night, he assumed I meant a football game. He was surprised when he arrived.

Among my friends, game night ALWAYS means board games, and we do it at least once a month. :)

There is Apples to Apples Jr. It should be good for that age if you don't want to go with the adult Apples to Apples.

    I seen that! Thank you!

I'll have to check the age recommendation on the original Apples to Apples.
