That's what I was saying, Romney lost this shit in the primaries.

Romney was wayyyy more moderate back in '03 but b/c of this whole teabagger fear thing they have going on, they keep pandering to it like the lap-dogs they consistently curse.

how do the liberals feel about the gay marriage and marijuana wins (i'm sure there's more) last night? typically, the left is not at all a fan of so called 'states rights'. to me this is the country working as intended. if colorado wants gay marriage or doesn't want to prosecute marijuana use, why should i give a damn in indiana? i understand many issues become more complicated when they start crossing state lines, but these small changes are how things start moving nationwide when you can't get it done on the federal level.

of course you have what is probably the most famous case of states rights being the states that decided to not enforce the fugitive slave act.

i think the sweeping all 50 state, one size fits all approach to some of these social issues is the wrong way to go period. sometimes it's better to get a bit of the country at a time and begin to win over hearts and minds while the rest of the country catches up. i never understand why the left has been so against this?

Regarding the state legislation votes, I think it is clear that the States is moving away from traditional, social conservativism.

If I was an American I would prefer you acted as a single nation, but you guys are kinda slow (but getting there).

The same reason the left was against nearly 100 years of Jim Crow laws in the South until the Civil Rights Act was enacted.

And against the Republican Party position of amendments to the US Constitution to effectively ban abortion and gay marriage. Or state laws like Texas's sodomy law that Ron Paul believes the state has a right to enact, or proposed federal laws like Ron Paul's "We the People Act" that would prohibit the US Supreme Court from acting on cases involving religion, reproduction or sexual orientation.

Or in other words, liberals are against laws that limit basic individual rights.

wasn't it the democrats that enacted the jim crow laws, not conservatives? are you against the votes in maine, maryland, colorado, and washington state? i dont imagine you being against the 'wins' in these states. i guess you can have it both ways though. denying fugitive slave act by states good, enacting crow laws bad, gay rights and mary jane laws good?

It was Southern conservative Democrats (who are now all Republican) who enacted Jim Crows laws and opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act (which btw, R Paul still opposes).

Which is why I said the left was against Jim Crow., not Democrats.

State "wins" for individual rights are great, but they can just as easily go the other way in the next election cycle. I think there are currently ten states that ban gay marriage in any form and others that ban marriage, but allow civil unions.

I, and those on the left, support federal protections for basic individual rights, including rights of privacy as opposed to those on the right who want federal bans on individual rights or at the very least believe states should have the right to ban abortion, ban gay marriage, ban the use of contraception, allow "whites only" establishments, criminalize sodomy....

Yes, it has gone both ways...that's why there's a balance.
Sometimes the states starts the debate...sometimes the Fed does.
While the Fed, strictly has precedent...in fair terms, it should be a bit of both...some States Rights, some Fed.

And yes, the Dems were the ones that did the Jim Crow Laws.
And the electorate has actually reversed over the years.
If you took a look at the 1908, it's kind of the reverse...where GOP & Dems have switched places.

It's not the name of the party...it's the platform and tone.
Look to the GOP to try to incorporate the Latino vote...it's the biggest demographic, and Latinos are traditionally conservative values.
They're going to have to address the Immigration Reform issue.

And it is confirmed...Obama won Florida.
    After a 4 day recount...just incredible.

Romney only won one battleground state, North Carolina.
This helps re-affirm the election even more so.

Let's hope that this significance define things better for his supporters and critics,
but I have a gut feeling that it will be ignored.

Just want to go back to this since you and redux mentioned it. It still amazes me how most people don't realize that back in the day the parties were the complete opposite of what they are now. The Democrats were the conservative party and the Republicans the liberal party. Most people know about the whole prohibition thing...but they don't realize how the parties were polar opposites back then.

Well, I wouldn't say the GOP back was Liberal...but they certainly were Progressive. (some difference)
And sometimes, too much so...they were the ones that put Prohibition in place...which most of the nation ended up rejecting in the long-run.
Just like I severely disagree with Bloomberg's law against large sodas...
His heart is in the right place, the ideal & principle is decent...but it's overkill and overboard, extreme...tredging on the freedoms of individuals.
Bloomberg was Republican, now Independent...and showing signs of Progressive/Liberal values lately...and in this case...it's too much.

That's why there's a balance...it's not the party...it's not the platform that it has.
It's the WAY they apply those philosophies and ideals...

The GOP has lost it's way, because they are ignoring who's rights they are tredging on.
They are treating those who disagree as someone beneath them.

I find it ironic that the ones that espouse "Americanism" so much, wrapping the flag around them and calling others Un-American,
are some of the same who say they want to leave the country...or secede from it.

Some need to get their heads on straight again.

    FYI

Election Maps - flip thru the set to see them all...the last is fascinating.
    Summary

Now that we've had some time for some more counting...and settling down.
The link shows some interesting maps on the election, not just red/blue to area...but pop density, percentages and by county.
For the most part, we're a nation of mottled purple...and most people living near water.

But of course, most media won't reporting on this...not as exciting or controversial. (gotta sell those ads... )
