  2. Wind is howling here in SE Michigan. Electricity is out. Who knows for how long? Cell phone and car charger are our lifeline. We may be spending the night at a local hotel.

I firmly believe that chiliburgers are underrated as a "I skipped lunch so I can have a late night snack while watching football" staple.

According to the news, a woman here in Toronto was killed by a piece of flying debris.

We're really not prepared for this sort of thing. At all.

Bonus: Power hasn't gone out. Yet. I'm hoping it'll stay. The weatherman says that tonight's going to be the worst night, so if we get through tonight we should be fine.

It's not as bad as that. We get the occasional severe storm. It just that they don't normally have a tropical origin.

Maybe you're just not used to living this close to Lake Ontario. I've lived on this lake my whole life.:p

What we're supposed to get is technically a tropical depression, which is one rank below tropical storm (less severe winds, essentially).

I think my last post might have come off as a bit panicky. I'm not overly concerned, just reflecting on the fact that Toronto isn't used to this kind of weather.

The woman mentioned previously was killed when a Staples sign was blown loose and struck her. Does that kind of thing happen in Florida? I don't recall having heard such stories. I wonder if they build their signs differently.

I'm from central Ontario. As Fangirl alluded, we're accustomed to the odd tornado. Hurricanes are something new, though.

And yeah, I know this isn't really a hurricane. We're not getting hit that hard. But it's still more than we're used to dealing with. I wonder what city services are going to look like tomorrow?

I'm waiting on Canada Post to deliver a parcel. I'm going to be annoyed if I don't get it due to the weather.

I hope 'postie' as my mum used to refer to him, comes through for you, Martian. Didn't know you were from Central Ontario. Such a huge province. All my family originates from the Barrie & Gravenhurst areas (post-crossing the Atlantic and fleeing the eastern US as Loyalists) which isn't truly central, I realize. North Bay was about as central as they got and that was only for about a decade. Folks from up there are pretty hardy when it comes to severe weather but it's true, I never dealt with a hurricane until I did my time on the east coast.

Poor lady with that sign--just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Ack. I'm wiped out and the new Dexter episode is finally available for me to watch and review. The watching part is my favourite so I think it is jammie time, some time spent with my favourite serial killer then off to bed. Hope everyone is dry and warm and has power. Hasta.

Well, this is the thing. There are tons of stories of people getting hurt or killed by blowing debris in this kind of weather. It's sad it happened, but it's hardly the first time I've heard of it.

And I'm not sure it matters where you are. With 60- to 90-km wind, shit's gonna get blown around.

No we're not Florida, but we also don't get any hurricane conditions.

well, the tiny town quadrant of the world was gripped by the collar and given a good shake overnight but that's it. the storm made landfall south. but goddamn, nyc & nj especially...and inland where the snow blitz is. hope all are safe and snug.

i determined again last night that electricity is also on my short list called capitalism: things that are hard to complain about. the list also includes indoor plumbing, telecommunications and convertibles.
