I call my MIL by her first name. I enjoy spending time with her sometimes. We go to get pedicures together. It's just that occasionally she has a way of saying things that puts an end to the conversation--as if her opinion is the only relevant one and there is no room for discussion. For example, I mentioned that a local restaurant was doing a great job of supporting the school I work out with a dine out event. She said she would never eat there because the sauce tastes like Chef Boyardee (for the record, I'm unsure the lady has had Chef Boyardee in the last 20 years, whereas I have [babysitting food, ugh], and thus the comparison is more recent for me--the sauce does taste overly sweet, but not Chef Boyardee or Spaghetti-Os sweet). Just the way that she said it left no room for my own opinion of that I've enjoyed the things I've had to eat there. When I tried to say as much, she said, "Olive Garden is better, and that's not saying much." Um, okay. It's also difficult when her son sides with her opinion. I get steamrolled and there's no room for me to share what I think about something, which is hurtful.

Lon Chaney Sr. is fantastic in that film. Taking a not so crazy guess you were watching one of the more recent versions of the story, but that is the only one I can readily think of off the top of my head. Silent films rank very high on my list of favourite things.

I really try to have an open mind and like to let others express themselves.
It's an awful feeling to get steamrolled in a good conversation. I think some folks don't hear themselves speaking. snowy I feel you would make a great daughter in law.

there's a 13 tide this morning. so yes. but when i looked up from my computer, i saw a sailboat floating across the lawn. reason did not immediately intrude.

i am looking at the complete manuscript. this is the first time i've printed out the whole thing. it's very strange looking at a pile of paper and thinking about the amount of time that went into putting things into it.

    there are 332 pages.
    that's many.

    Hey snowy:

I hate to get hung up on labels but 'mother-in-law' is a doozy.
What you've described of this MIL of yours has nothing to do with her being your MIL. She's just rude (sometimes).
Your husband with the steamrolling---it's kinda obvious that ol' mom is not setting a great example. Just the same, I hope when you two are in private that you share exactly what you have here: 'I get steamrolled and there's no room for me to share what I think about something, which is hurtful.'

I'm fine if my kid doesn't marry but I think it is inevitable that the terrifying label of mother-in-law will someday be hung around my neck.

    House cleaned.
    Grocery shopping done.
About to start the traditional spaghetti supper which I am looking forward to with an unwarranted amount of enthusiasm.
It just sounds really good tonight.

Did a 5k charity walk this morning. Boy do my feet hurt. Nothing like a good workout to remind you of how old you are.

If you bring it to my house, I'll open a good bottle of wine to go with it. *deal*

Put about 350 miles on the bike this weekend. Went to visit the area where I lived until I was 17. Drove by the three houses I lived in during that time and several of the schools I attended. It was nice to see that all of them were being kept up and looked taken care of. Saw several friends I hadn't seen in a very long time. Beautiful weather for it too.
