Droid or iPhone?

Old battery tech? Did the latest droid come out with dilithium crystals installed? From my perspective, the iPhone has a superior OS, the best display technology and the largest catalog of available apps. But such is the nature of our fanboyism.

If you find the iPhone hard to use, you should be wearing a helmet and accompanied by a handler at all times. Actually, same goes for Android. I wouldn't consider Android or iOS particularly reliable, my Droid X and iPad 2 both hang and crash constantly, iOS just handles it a bit more gracefully. The other thing that bugs me about Android is that unless you buy a Nexus, there's no guarantee that your phone is going to have developer or community support for more than initial bugfixes, and maybe not even that (especially if you buy anything but a Nexus from Samsung.) Who knows what version of Android your model will stop at? Apple will at least keep developing iOS, although it would be nice if they would make end-of-life announcements ahead of time instead of "Surprise! iOS 6 won't work on the first generation iPad and hopefully nobody with a first gen MacBook Air wants Mountain Lion ."

Apple may develop iOS but unlike android just because a 3gs gets a "version 6" doesn't mean it has the same features at all as the latest 4g's "version 6", so in reality they're no different than Samsung et al that simply skip the fluff and don't update at all. At least with android though you can go to XDA or SDX and get the upgrade yourself and not worry about constantly being actively sabotaged by Apple.

Both sides of the fence have an industry-wide problem with long term support, the only difference is how honest and consumer-hostile the company behind it is.

This has been discussed before and I am all for graceful error handling and recovery but I don't like it when a program (app, application, os or device) pretends that nothing happened and tries convince me that the error or crash is just my imagination. My opinion is the same regardless who or what tries a stunt like that.

I've gotten to the point that it doesn't matter what you call or code the error during the crash. If the application crashed many will just state that it crashed during whatever usage. Since most of the time I can't do anything about the coded error anyways, the result is the same, I know there is an error even if one does not display and I wait for the developer to update the application.

RIM is on an enividble downward spiral because of terrible management holding on to old technology because it used to be the best thing going. They will be bought for patent holdings within a year and blackberry style phones will go the way of the 8-track.

This is probably true. Hypothetically RIM could pull it out -- it's my opinion that their best move would be to move away from Blackberry OS in favour of building an Android platform. Their hardware quality was always excellent, but they need to shake the outdated image they've picked up.

Sadly, it's not likely to happen.

  12. Baraka_Guru, I left Blackberry out because, frankly I didn't consider that as an option. I know some businessmen who still use them, though.

I completely understand. However, those of you who are American may not have the same perspective on this as Canadians do.

RIM has been Canada's tech darling for years now, and many of us are still suffering from the hangover from Nortel.

Also, for whatever reason, all my siblings use BlackBerrys. Even my teenaged nephew does.

I have a Droid Charge and I'm pleased with it. Wanted to get a Droid Bionic, but it came out too late for me to get a discounted upgrade or an unlimited data plan. My sister has an iPhone 4 I like my droid better than her phone, plus I already have an iPod touch. If you get an iPhone 4S, at least at this time, you're getting a 3G phone, if you want a 4G phone you'll have to go with an Android phone.

Going to try for a galaxy S3. Why? Because it's damn near as powerful as my actual laptop, has almost the same screen resolution, and is officially solidly at the point of diminishing returns in terms of screen quality and processing power. Also I've been using phones so slow I can miss a call in the time it takes to answer the call and I'm kinda sick of that.

  16. I will continue to buy iPhones until Apple is no longer the leader in apps and app support. I don't care how fast or badass a phone is. If it doesnt have what I personally want then all that shiny tech is meaningless. Apple knows this and it shows in their sales.

I waited until the new iphone came out, decided that I wanted a iphone because the Samsung Galaxy 3S seems like it will be broken or orphaned by the lawsuit.

so now I wait until I get my iphone.

Iphones are good. real good. you can talk and surf at the same time, their pretty fast, Suri is always fun to tease, and they have very nice apps. The only thing I don't like is that if ANYTHING goes wrong. you have to take it to the Apple store. which is crazy cause some things you can fix yourself.
