It was coming, maybe even overdue. He's had a death wish for 30 years. Driving drunk. Fortunately he didn't take anyone with him. My grief is reserved for my children, who maintained the hope that he would change his ways someday.

It's taken me years to resolve my feelings about him and have been able, these last few years, to have a relationship with him based on detached compassion. Smart guy, badly damaged. Hard not to feel sorry for someone so plagued by personal demons they destroy their own potential. The way it is with people sometimes.
