I hang them out side to dry in the sun and have no problem with smell, if you can do that. I also find that borax works pretty good on the towels every other week in the winter months when I use the dryer.

Yeaaah, if I put my clothes outside to dry they'd be missing in an hour. I don't live in the ghetto but I'm pretty close.

I guess I could string lines in my basement but something tells me that'd just lead to a new, different kinda funk.

Plus one on the borax. If it's not at the supermarket, a good hardware store should have it.
You could also try using Clorox, (the real stuff, not bleach substitute) but not too much, especially if your clothes might have had a while to "ferment" between use and laundry. Don't just throw wet and sweaty stuff in a pile on the floor or into the laundry hamper. Hang them up (fat chance) or drape them over the back of a chair or something so that they can dry out.
Also, if they sat for too long (like all day or over night) in the washer before going into the dryer, semi-permanent stink happens.
And what's wrong with cotton? I wear cotton more than anything else.

    How you underestimate my OCD.

I have hangers specifically set aside for keeping sweaty clothes hung up until they dry out so my hamper doesn't turn into a science experiment.

A man does that? Unbelievable, I know. It's also impossible that I backup to my ExHDD once a month on the 15th.

Washer beep, clothes go in the dryer... dryer beeps, clothes get folded and put away. Still smell a little weird, though.

Keep in mind that I'm the kind of guy that folds his socks for fun. I give my dates survival kits as gifts, for fuck's sake.

Nothing is wrong with cotton for a stroll through the grocery store or a while lounging on the couch. Cotton, however, is pretty uncomfortable to wear if you're sweating all day. Cotton gets wet, stays wet and sticks to you like a clingy girlfriend; an Underarmour shirt is dry by the time I finish my ~10 minute drive from the gym back to the house. I was skeptical of paying for fancy workout clothes but there really is a big difference.

What you smell is probably fabric softener. That's what it sounds like. Performance fabrics like under armour are extruded to wick away, but fabric softener actually "clogs the pores."

Wash several times in just plain water.

Avoid fabric softener and dryer sheets with these fabrics. Use woolite and wash on delicate cycle.

I don't use fabric softener. I'm a man. I do use dryer sheets, though. Keeps the shirts from coming out as a big ball. Maybe that's it.

I recently made the mistake of weighing myself and found that to my horror that I'm only 65kg (143ish pounds?). I've always been a skinny lad, but this time last year I was something like 74kg, mind you, I was eating shit, doing fuck all exercise, and felt crap all the time. But for someone who is 5'11" I just feel a little on the 'too lean' side. Or maybe I just need to accept that this is what my body will be like while I'm riding nearly 200km a week and racing on top of that. The funny thing is the amount I'm eating, like eating a lot, all the time. Just seems to all get burned to ash the second it enters my body.

Dryer sheets can put a weird film on performance fabrics. I wash S's in All Free & Clear in warm water with half-strength softener. We went through a period of horrible funk and I bought a laundry additive that pulled the stench out. Now, if they're reeeeeeally bad, I'll toss then with some baking soda and let them sit, dry, for about 20m before washing.

Yeah the basement won't work, you need sunlight, it kills the bacteria which is giving that funk smell.
I thought there was some kinda silient code in the ghetto about not stealing other peoples clothes off the lines.

Dryer sheets are just fabric softener in drag... sorta like Plan9 on a friday night....

Seriously, though, I work for a co. that makes performance fabrics, and what you describe sounds exactly like you've hit 'em with one or the other without realizing that's a no-no. A lot of people don't know this.

Well, now I know... and knowing is half the battle.

    GI Laundry!

    ...

Thanks for the tips, everybody... I guess I'll have to wash my gym clothes separate and be careful of what chemicals I use on 'em.

OMG, I didn't make to the gym this week. Really need a workout after this week. Missed my dragonboat practice on the river, totally messed me up missing it.
Just in case you guys don't know what this sport is, I uploaded a pic. We raise about $150,000 every year for Cancer Research, 500 meter races, 2mins.

"Those who do not find time for exercise will have to find time for illness." - Earl of Derby

We have a guest lecturer for a cardiopulmonary unit this week, who has been throwing a lot of research at us. One of the big points is that lack of fitness is a more important determinant in long-term health than risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, obesity, etc.. I'll hopefully be able to find the article to post the abstract for you guys (for that specific study, but there are many with the same conclusion), but realize that your lifestyle and finding time for activity is extremely important to your longevity and your well-being. I'm happy to see all the positive posts in this thread!

After a lazy summer of not caring, I am trying to make better choices with food. For breakfast, I had tofu lightly fried in olive oil with furikake (seaweed/sesame seasoning from Japan) and about a cup of greens that I threw on top and let wilt. I also had a kale-blueberry smoothie. Lunch will be a grilled eggplant salad, and dinner will be a stir-fry.
